4th Report of the ISPAI www.hotline.ie Service

www.hotline.ie is an initiative of the Internet Service Providers Association of Ireland (ISPAI). The aim of the Hotline is to combat illegal content, especially child pornography, existing on the Internet. It is the critical element through which the Irish ISP industry plays its part in global efforts to generate a safer Internet environment.

The Hotline provides a secure and confidential service for the public to anonymously report content they have encountered on the Internet and suspect may be illegal.

The Hotline works within the growing network of INHOPE member Hotlines around the world. INHOPE maintains a trusted international network for the rapid exchange of information about illegal content so swift action can be taken in the appropriate jurisdiction.

The Hotline completed its seventh year of operation in November 2006 and by the end of that year it had processed 10,246 reports. Averaged over the seven years, approximately 12 percent of reports received were assessed as illegal.

This online publication provides background and statistics based on reports received from the public in the period 1st January to 31st December 2006. An analysis of findings and comparisons with the previous year are presented. The ISPAI funds and operates the Hotline and currently receives 50% of Hotline operational costs from the European Commission’s Safer Internet Programme.
