Industry support
ISPAI members actively support and promote the Hotline as part of the terms of self-regulation of the
Internet industry which were agreed with government in line with the recommendations
of the "Working Group on the Illegal and Harmful Use of the Internet" which was published in 1998.
In 2009 the ISPAI had 22 members who financially support the Hotline. These were (in no particular order):
- Eircom, BT Ireland, O2, Vodafone, Bitbuzz, EuroKom, HEAnet, Verizon
- Irish Broadband, UPC (Chorus/NTL), Google, UTV-Internet, Irish Domains
- Clearwire, Blacknight, Hutchinson 3G Ireland, Satellite Broadband Ireland
- MyHost, Meteor, Hosting Ireland, Perlico and Strencom
A key aspect of the ISPAI Code of Practice and Ethics is commitment to the Hotline and adherence to its procedures for “notice and take down” agreed with Government and An Garda Síochána in the event of illegal content or customer use being discovered on their facilities.
Subscribing to the ISPAI also contributes to the financing of the international efforts mounted by the Hotline and its INHOPE counterparts in the global fight against criminal use of the Internet, especially for the distribution of child pornography. It is incumbent on the Irish Internet services industry to work in concert against the possibility of illegal content being hosted in or distributed from this country.
